Why Gremwell?

I never thought that coming up with a name for a company will become a blocking point.

Of course, first we thought about naming it Bezroutchko & Bezroutchko (because it sounds great and it is easy to remember). Don't really know why we have abandoned this idea.

We wanted the name to indicate that it is something about computers (something with "bit", "byte" or "hex" in it). We also wanted a hint of magic (but not the word "magic" itself, because it is already in MagicTree). And we also wanted something like "works", "mill", "factory" or along those lines.

It is amazing, how difficult it is to come up with a name for which the .com domain is not taken. Try it yourself once.

After totally exhausting our imagination we thought: "Okay, let's just use a word that does not mean anything". And we fired pwgen and looked at what it came up with. It actually came up with such gems as "aipoo" and "ifail". All the better ones are taken. Actually, ifail.com is also taken.

Then Alex took it really personally, and went to the web site that generates domain names based on the words you suggest, using synonyms. He entered "fairy" (for the magic part), "works" and probably "hex". The site suggested ... wait for it ... "blind anus fairy . com".

Then Alex had a sudden hit of inspiration and came up with "Gremwell". It is supposed to suggest gremlins and wells.

Gremlins are, according to the Fae Dictionary, are "Little, mischievous spirits of tools and machinery. They are responsible for the little mishaps when working with tools, such as the sudden diversion of a hammer towards your thumb when you are driving a nail. They blunt sharp objects such as saws and chisels, misplace tools, etc." We thought that particularly fitting.

And wells are, of course, dark places.
